Picking The Right Sub-Reddit
86Let me be honest with you: Reddit can be a terrible, terrible place filled with incredibly rude, troll-ish people. They will downvote your hubs. They will post mean comments on your links. They will make you cry if you're a sensitive person. Ok, maybe not that last one, but the other two are true. Redditors are not always nice people. They are not like you and me. You and me, we try to help one another, we're a community. Redditors can be anyone from your next-door-neighbor to some random guy in another country who's hiding behind a username so they can flame others and be a general pain in the rear. Don't say I didn't warn you. Reddit can be a great source of traffic, but it can also be a heartbreaking source of people calling you a spammer and trying to make you feel bad for wanting to be a successful internet writer.
Please keep that in mind when using Reddit. I might have 16,000 views from that site, but they came with banned accounts, the title of 'spammer', and negative comments on almost all of my articles - whether they were put in the correct sub-Reddit or not. I'm going to try and limit your exposure to this side of Reddit. You'll still get some jerks on the site who won't mind flaming you for posting, but if you follow my advice, you might be able to spare yourself some of the pain these people try to inflict on hubbers like us.
My Favorite Sub-Reddits
- Harry Potter - This is where I first found success with Reddit. The Harry Potter Redditors click everything, so I usually get more than a thousand views in the first twenty four hours. A couple have almost reached two thousand even though the links have fallen back a few pages.
- Aww (aka - thecutelist) - Anything that's "aww" worthy, in a good way. I submitted my Random Acts Of Kindness: Week #4 hub to this sub-Reddit because it had cute cat pictures.
- Get Motivated - All things quote related or inspiring I submit to Get Motivated. Two of my quote hubs are ranging over a thousand views and a third is on its way.
- Shameless Plugs - This is basically for anyone who can't find a sub-Reddit or if you are trying to sell them something. I've submitted a few things on here, usually cross-posts though.
- TwoxChromosomes - If your hub has anything to do with being female, then this sub-Reddit will definitely get you views. I've gotten almost two thousand just for my How To Judge Your Local Pregnant Woman hub. No one flamed me here, either. Not once.
What Should Be Submitted
Whenever I publish a hub, I almost always submit it to Reddit. The only times I don't are when they are related to this site and its members. For instance, my hub reports don't get submitted to Reddit. I sincerely doubt anyone on there has any use for them. After all, what are they going to do with the statistics? Eat them with a side of baked beans? Unless someone is really interested in joining this site and wants to know what to expect or what they can achieve, my hub reports have zero interest to anyone on Reddit. That goes for my pros and cons of Reddit hub as well. Since most of the people on that site aren't submitting links because they want traffic, they have no interest in how using Reddit can be good and bad for their daily impressions and AdSense clicks.
So what do I submit? Virtually everything else, especially if in my stats the metrics list the revenue potential as three or more dollar signs. I've begun to realize that the more dollar signs there are, the higher my CPM will be for the HubPages Ad Program. I didn't realize that when I started writing Harry Potter articles. So even though I was getting several hundred impressions a day, my CPM was just a little over two dollars. Not to say that making a dollar a day is a bad thing considering I just started here on the site, just that I would like a little more money for my troubles. I'm not throwing myself to the Redditor lions to be eaten alive for pennies.
How To Find A Good Sub-Reddit
I found all of my favorite sub-Reddits through the search feature. Whenever I would publish a hub I would submit it to all the usual sites, saving Reddit for last. I would take the theme of my hub, say "inspirational quotes", and type it into the search box. I did that so I could figure out where people with similar links were submitting theirs. Quotes is one of the first sub-Reddits that pop up, but you need to be careful. There are some sub-Reddits, like quotes, that accept text-only or image-only submissions. The quotes sub-Reddit is strict text-only and since I didn't want to get immediately downvoted for writing some text and including a link, I just moved on. That's how I found the Get Motivated sub-Reddit. It wasn't 100% ideal, but it worked well nonetheless.
You also need to read the sidebars of each sub-Reddit you check out. Certain sub-Reddits will have rules. I know that when I was trying to figure out where to publish my 9/11 tribute hub, I immediately looked for the politics sub-Reddit. It has over 700,000 readers and would probably have brought in some amazing traffic to my hub, but self-posts were banned. I ended up not being able to find the right sub-Reddit to post that link. So I submitted it to Shameless Plugs and yes, I got a few negative comments, but it was the only place available at the time. Since yesterday the self-post ban has been revoked on politics, but that doesn't happen on all sub-Reddits. World News doesn't allow self-posts and reserves the right to delete your link if it breaks their rules. You have to be careful when submitting to certain sub-Reddits. An easy way to get banned is to keep submitting over and over to the same sub-Reddit without knowing you're breaking their rules each time.
Sub-Reddit Listing Sites
Where To Find A Sub-Reddit List
If you have no patience and don't want to spend time looking through the sub-Reddits in the way described above, then you can just follow the links to your right. They are Reddit-approved sites that contain lists of the sub-Reddits in the Reddit universe. I personally like Meta-Reddit, given the options, the other two interfaces confuse me a little. Still, use whatever works for you. Just as long as your hub fits under the sub-Reddit you've chosen, it shouldn't matter how you found it or how long it took.
Choosing A Title
When submitting to a sub-Reddit, you are allowed to change the title to appeal to others. I've done that on multiple occasions. I'm not distorting the purpose of my hub, I'm just attempting to gain a specific clientele and let them know that my link does belong in their sub-Reddit. When I submitted my Halloween costume hub to the Harry Potter sub-Reddit, I changed the title to "I want to be Luna for Halloween!" That ended up attracting more viewers than "Halloween With Harry Potter". My hub talked about dressing up as Luna, so I hadn't purposely mislead anyone. I also change my quote titles when submitting to the Get Motivated sub-Reddit. Putting "reflective quotes" doesn't exactly draw in the traffic. I used "motivational quotes about life" instead, considering the reflective quotes title was followed by the words "quotes to make you think about life". Altering a word or two can really help you appeal to more people.

I have multiple accounts on Reddit and it's completely allowed, it says so in the FAQ. I use those accounts for when one gets banned or put on suspension for a temporary amount of time. Because even though I'm submitting to sub-Reddits correctly and using the site right, not all people enjoy my hubs. That's ok. I'm thick-skinned. I can handle it. With that being said, I don't always just submit my hub to one sub-Reddit and call it done.
Usually I'll pick out a couple sub-Reddits when I'm researching where to plug my link and I'll write them down. I'll leave my link up on one for a couple days and once the traffic starts dying down, sometimes I will delete that link and post it elsewhere. Lately I've been using short URL HubPages offers in the metrics section of the stats area and not deleting the original link. Because if you post the same link without deleting the other, it'll show up in "other discussions" area on Reddit. I haven't found it on the site where it says you're not allowed to post the same thing twice, but I try to keep the double posting to a minimum by just deleting one link or using the short URL. I also don't submit the same hub twice using the same account. Not only is that asking for trouble, it would just seem suspicious to me if I were a true Redditor at heart.
Cross-posting is completely allowed. People do it on sub-Reddits all the time. So if someone tells you not to do it, unless it's a moderator for the site, ignore them. You can check the rules if you want, but there are plenty of people who are cross-posting on the site. Take a couple of them down with you if someone tries to harass you about it. You can always put in the title (x-post from politics) or whatever. On the Harry Potter sub-Reddit they have even smaller sub-Reddits for each of the four houses. People who post random things in the Slytherin common room post them in r/harrypotter all the time, labeling it as a x-post, and no one complains. If it were truly against the rules, I'm sure I'd see this cross-posting habit less often.
Hopefully This Helps With Submitting
These are just a few tips and tricks I've picked up along the way. Hopefully they help others looking for success using Reddit as a traffic source. I'm not sure how great it is for AdSense clicks, since I haven't been getting those for the past week or so, but it helps if you're looking for a boost in your traffic and earning more from the HubPage Ad Program.

Great article, very well organized. You should include some of the blog carnivals and other domains that you also submit your hubs or websites to. Maybe they could be included as a links section at the bottom - I think It'd add some more value.
You know you have my VOTED UP!!!! After your guidance and my figuring out what the heck I was doing, I resubmitted my one link and voila - the traffic jumped. Have since submitted another link with the same success. I was wondering about submitting the informational hubs and now I now how to search the right sub-reddit. I have not been fortunate enough to have any clicks for Google AdSense, but have logged increased traffic, as well as HubPages Ad and CMP impressions.
Like I said before "You Rock!" [voted up, useful & awesome] - HT & Teddy
Jedi...I didn't even know that there are sub-reddits. I've submitted a few things to reddit, but I only see about 5 categories--entertainment, sports.... How do you find the SUB-reddits? Click on your link above. How in the world did you find them? Very cool. I'm excited about trying to fit some of my hubs in there. Voted up, useful, and awesome. Thanks so much.
Okay, Jedi, I'm still confused about how to find the sub-reddits. Go to reddit.com and look for what? I still only see a few choices of how to submit links. I need your awesome help--step by step--in finding those sub-reddits!!!!!!!
Victoria - Do you see up at the top bar where it says
ALL - RANDOM - PICS - REDDIT.COM - FUNNY - POLITICS - GAMING - ASKREDDIT - WORLDNEWS - VIDEOS - IAMA - TODAYILEARNED - AWW - ........
these are all sub-reddits.....believe me it took me a while to figure this all out too.
Oh! All that stuff up at the top! Thanks, tarrka! I had no idea what those were. And dear JediJessicuh, if you write that hub, I would love it. You guys are great! so helpful!
I read that someone wrote "You rock!" And you do, Jedi! Thanks!
Hey, it's all JediJessicuh....I'm taking baby steps with her help, believe me!
Jedi is definitely a whiz at this stuff!!! Very savvy!
Well, dear Jedi (okay if I call you Jedi, or do you prefer something else?), I look forward to your sharing your sub-Reddit step-by-step secrets. You rock!
I am slow to catch on to sites like Reddit, but articles such as yours give me the information and courage I need to wade in with both feet. I've bookmarked this for reference.
Jessica your articles/hubs are incredible. I've been submitting to Reddit with no success. Now, I'm going to try your tips. I want to friend you on Reddit but don't know how. Voted this hub up.
Thanks to your great hub and information I have been researching sub-reddits. I found a site that lists 8,200; http://s272568090.onlinehome.us/reddit/subredditli
In my last post I listed the site with 8,200 sub-reddits. Not all of them are sub-reddits, however, what I did find is when you enter a sub-reddit in the box a drop down list appears to help you pick a sub-reddit. If the enter your own, the one you pick may or may not be a true sub-reddit but reddit will tell you if it isn't.
Well, when I just inquired as to the right sub to link my info hubs, I was told that what I'm doing and how I'm doing it is not correct -
"Posting that link like you've been posting it will result in you being banned from the website as a spammer, and could ultimately result in your website being blacklisted. Beyond that, you can see for yourself that the links you've already submitted are ignored or downvoted into oblivion."
Well, they don't seem to be ignored from the views counted on HubPages. What gives with this do you think?
That was from Reddit from HappyBadger when I had inquired as to submitting the informational articles. Here was the latest response:
"Pretty much. Posting unsolicited articles from a self-owned site while at the same time not being an established user is a very quick road to ban town. You could either become part of the community or become an advertiser, but the route you're taking hasn't worked for the many thousands who've tried it before you :P"
Well, seeing as I don't own HubPages, it really isn't my website - this is our avenue to publish our own written work.
We are having a productive conversation - so I'm learning the moderators are checking.
"Now I'm not an admin so I don't make the rules, but HubPages isn't the issue here. It's the fact that it's your hubpage. If you were to share your stories using self-posts, it'd be no different from any other submission. It's when you link to an external site that you presumably profit from that redditors bring out the report button. When that happens, mods like me have to step in and the spam filter starts automatically picking up data to blacklist."
Put your name in Search and found Harry Potter article but can't find where to add you.
I'm not using Reddit and I can't say this hub helps me to decide whether or not I should join the site :( I'll bookmark this hub and see whether Reddit is worth my time...some time in the future LOL
After you log into your account, go to the Preferences area next to your name; you will then see a tab that says "Friends" - key in the person you want to add and click on the add button.
Hi Jessica - here's the sub that should work for you: http://www.reddit.com/r/howto - it definitely looks like it these are serious info reddits.
It's nice to be able to help you out for a change! Good luck!
Very nice hub, thank you..i really needed to know more about reddit, since it has a little complicated interface than stumbleupon or digg.
Voted up ;)
Hi Jedijessicuh, your reddit hubs are really helpful. I followed your advice about putting each hub on the appropriate subreddits. I used to just submit my hubs there and wait for traffic to come. It has helped me boost traffic to my hubs. The only problem I had with reddit was that the site was always putting my account on a time out. Waiting for several minutes does not always solve the problem. I had to make several accounts to be able to post again.
However, just recently, I subscribed to different subreddits. I started to participate just like a real redditor. I would even leave some comments here and there and also answer some of the questions redditors ask, including relationship-related questions. People liked some of my comments and answers. I am slowly increasing my link karma and comment karma. Because of this, I don't get time outs too often anymore. I am also becoming thick-skinned already. I don't care anymore about the downvotes and rude comments. Not all users are rude anyway. Reddit has become my favorite social bookmarking site.
Voted up and rated useful.
Jessica, you have been amazing with your information. Several month ago I tried Reddit and was banned as spammer. I tried posting too fast and only to Reddit.com. You have helped me understand how to use the site, and I am getting more hits on a few hubs. Patience is involved, and I am getting better.
I was told that Hubpages was considered a spamming site, but the person encouraged me to keep trying and wished me luck.
I thank you for writing these hubs, and I am slowing making my way to understanding the subreddits. Is cross posting the same as posting the same hub in different subreddits?
Again, thanks so much. YOU DO ROCK!! :-)
sholland - did the person say why HP was considered a spamming site?
Wow! You give some really great, detailed advice about Reddit. I get a TON of traffic from Reddit and agree about some people being total butt heads! Really? Who the heck are these people that they have so much free time to leave rude comments anyway?! I have this one nutcase who keeps commenting the same "you're a spammer, blah, blah" on all my links. I just barely skimmed your article, but intend to experiment with some of the advice you've given about the sub-reddits. I notice that my recipe articles (baking and cooking) get a lot of views, but I realize I could be even more specific when submitting my links. Thanks for sharing! :)
Great hub, I still struggle with where to post my articles. I write mostly about Infidelity, parenting, and beauty tips. I have yet to have a submission make the main page because impost them in the wrong areas???
I was planning on creating an account with Reddit to generate some more traffic to my Hubs, but now I'm definitely going to give it some more thought and research before I begin. Thanks for writing this Hub!
Your so right, there are some incredibly rude people on reddit, speaking from my own experience on the site. You have shared some very useful information here, thank you :) Voted up and useful.
Thanks for this very informative hub. I just started using reddit recently to try to generate more traffic, and I will definitely be taking your suggestions under consideration! Voted up and useful!

I first discovered reddit.com through one of your hubs. I decided to give it a try, and I'm glad I did. Ya some people on there are straight buttheads, but there's always those kinds of people. Thanks for the information on tweaking my success on reddit even further.
