Gossip Girl, Season 5 Premiere Review

82

By JEDIJESSICUH

I've loved Gossip Girl since it premiered in 2007. I'm not ashamed of my feelings for this series or my love for Chuck Bass. Yes, you heard me right; when it comes to crushing on fictional characters, Chuck is my bread and butter. There's just something about his self-confidence that makes my heart race. I can see why Blair slept with his uncle, Jack, too. These Bass man make watching Gossip Girl all that more exciting. With that being said, you know that I tuned in to watch the season five premiere last night. Season four ended with Dorota throwing away Blair and Serena's garbage, a positive pregnancy test sticking out on top. And even though she was supposed to be marrying the prince, I was hoping Blair and Chuck had conceived a one night stand baby.

Alas, the CW never fails to make things like who got knocked up last season the very last thing they deal with in the new season. Spoilers ahead, for those who were salivating in front of their television when Chuck pulled up on a motorcycle.

How about that Serena?

I haven't been particularly fond of Serena in any season, ever. She's always been this perfect, beautiful blonde with nice legs and a terrible reputation. Yet everything works out for her and everyone loves her. The few who hate her never make it long on the show and we all know the entire premise of the first episode of season one was her coming back from boarding school. So what's going on with her in season five? Sure, she's helping on the set of The Beautiful And Damned in Hollywood, but now that she's accepted a job offer to stay in L.A., is she going to be written off? I don't understand her storyline yet. So much for college though, right? But if she is going to stay in L.A., I'm curious to see if Gossip Girl will be jetting back and forth between the coasts to keep track of what mischief Serena's getting herself into.

But other than taking responsibility for her actions in this first episode and deciding to take a job in L.A., there wasn't much about Gossip Girl's most infamous blonde bombshell in the season premiere. While I'm crossing my fingers on her being written out, there are shots of her in the episode two preview and she ran into Charlie, who's not really Charlie. Guess she'll be around for a bit, but doing what?

Dair to believe?

Dan and Blair have been given the couple name "Dair", pronounced like 'dare'. Now we all know they got comfy last season, what with their movie watching and occasional kiss, but they seemed to finally go their separate ways in the finale. Yet the moment Blair sees trouble on the horizon with the prince, she drops everything and runs straight to Dan. Now I'm all about exploring the possibility of this couple, but wasn't it Chuck that Blair slept with at the end of season four? So why is she running into Dan's arms? And, better question, when did he fall in love with her? Because I wasn't aware he had such strong feelings for Blair, or maybe I just missed all the signs.

I think what really killed me about this couple is that Dan went through the trouble of tracking down the prince to make sure the story he wrote about Blair didn't get published and he failed to tell her that! He was all for running away to the Hamptons, yet that got nipped in the bud when Louis showed up to tell Dan he'd gotten the piece killed. Blair was livid that Dan didn't tell her what Louis was doing, that he was doing something for her benefit.

Who'd have thought that the characters who hated each other the most in the series are in the midst of their very own relationship storyline drama?

Nate who?

Just like previous seasons Nate seems to be sleeping with cougars. Unlike the other characters in the premiere, he wasn't given a plotline. Unless you count the fact that he's realized he doesn't know who he is or something like that. If his plotline is redeveloping his character, I will be highly uninterested in his scenes. I understand wanting to undergo a personality change or be someone else, but I think the only reason they're going with this story arc is because Nate had nothing going on for him at the end of season four.

The new Chuck Bass?

In California, (most likely) to forget about his love for Blair, we see a new side of Chuck this season: Yes, Man Chuck. Think of Jim Carrey in Yes, Man, throw in some daring acts, a little mature fun and you've got what happened to my beloved Chuck in this season's premiere. It's so typical for him to be running away from Blair, but I have to say: he let her go. And while I'm hoping his returning to New York will spur on their lost romance, I am hard-pressed to believe the writer's will return the beast to his Beauty.

I was, however, excited to see dangerous Chuck, though that's fairly synonymous with stupid Chuck. After drinking he decided that he and his date were going to go motorcycle around Los Angeles. I could see his crash coming from a mile away, but I still screamed when he wiped out. I'm not sure if he's attempting to pull a Bella-doing-dangerous-things-to-see-Edward stunt this season, but I want my Chuck to be whole by the finale. And, if he's Blair's baby daddy, I would like if he was alive to see his kid. I think that once he puts down the Whiskey and grows up a little bit he could be a great father.

Who's pregnant?

At first my husband thought it was Serena, because she emphasized in the beginning of the episode that she had stopped drinking over summer. But later on Blair's mom finds a 'What To Expect When You're Expecting' book in the house and Dorota fesses up to being pregnant for a second time. But just when you think that it's a let down that, of all people, Dorota is pregnant, the CW throws you a curve ball and we find out that it's Blair! Or at least that's what the seamstress who was working on her wedding dress has led us all to believe. I'm content with that, personally, but now we have to play the "who's my baby daddy?" game.

Who do you think is the baby daddy?

  • Prince Louis
  • Chuck Bass
  • Dan Humphrey

There are three people in the running: Prince Louis, Chuck Bass, and the shocker of the season, Daniel Humphrey. I'm fingering Dan as the culprit, because it was hinted at several times during the premiere that they did some more-than-friendly acts during their time together, but no one knows for sure. And while I'm personally rooting for it to be Chuck, I can't foresee the CW furthering my love for the couple by making that wish come true. Then there's the prince, who could be the baby's father, but that would be too boring. It's going to suck if we find out that it really is Dorota who is pregnant. I would hate the CW if they did that to me.

Who's your favorite character this season so far?

I'm for Chuck and Blair getting back together this season, even if it doesn't look like they will. I was particularly saddened to find out that the baby was Prince Louie's. I thought a baby would bond together Chair forever. Guess not.
