Facebook To Come Out With New Timeline Profiles

By

At the F8 developer conference on September 22, 2011 Mark Zuckerberg released that he would be making another major change to Facebook: timeline profiles. His tagline for this new update is, "It's your whole life." Considering the social network already asks for everything from your sexual preference to your political views, I almost couldn't believe the idea that Facebook would be adding another feature that would peer into your life. Being called "a new way for users to express who they are", this new timeline profile will let friends call up pictures, status updates and activities you've posted on your page since you joined four months or four years ago.

You will be given complete control over what shows up on this new timeline feature, from what photos certain people are allowed to see to the status updates even a stranger could view. Zuckerberg is making it possible for people to tell their entire life stories on one page. No longer will people need to write memoirs or auto-biographies, they will just need to direct people to their Facebook page.

Do you plan to continue using Facebook?

  • Yes, I think the updates will make the site better.
  • No, Zuckerberg just needs to leave Facebook alone.
  • Maybe, it depends on how the changes go into effect.

Zuckerberg thinks he's evolutionizing social networking for the masses, but from what I can see he's only running Facebook into the ground. Already people are leaving the site for the new Google+ as a result of the most recent update. Does he not see that if he keeps ignoring the requests of his users he will be setting Facebook up for the same fate as the once popular Myspace? This is a man of great intelligence, there's no doubt about that, but he is showcasing his stupidity by brushing aside the complaints of the people he's marketing to.

While the new timeline has a sleeker, more professional look to it, I dread the day it will actually premiere. My news feed was filled with angry commenters the day the Facebook ticker came out and several who professed their undying hate for the new 'top news' feature headlining our homepage. I can't imagine what the site will be like when they make the profile change. If you ask me there should be an option of sticking with old Facebook versus new Facebook. I'm sure there's a couple people out there who enjoy the new ticker and won't mind the implementation of a timeline profile, but I'm not one of them. I'm a simple person who likes simple things. These new Facebook updates might be more high tech, but I feel Zuckerberg is going to lose a lot of his users when they put everything into place.

How do you feel about all the changes Mark Zuckerberg is making to Facebook?

I hadn't heard about or read about the latest update - I just saw the new timeline when I logged on. Mind you I'm open to change but this is just a pain in my backside. I'm hard pressed to validate that these changes are for the better. I agree the user should have the option to either stay with the former look or go with the new version. [voted up and interesting]

I have to disagree, while facebook always comes with backlash after updates, once people get used to everything (which takes about a day) they start to like the new features. I think a timeline profile would be interesting. Me and my friends just recently decided to go back and see our very first wall posts from 2007, it was pretty interesting to see what was going on in our lives back then. At this point I think Facebook is still standing strong, Google+ not so much. Voted interesting nonetheless. :)

Tarrka - Well the timeline profiles haven't come out yet, but what you're seeing right now was the most recent update that caused quite the uproar. I personally think Zuckerberg is setting the site up for an early demise, but who knows.

Neerizzle - You can disagree, no hard feelings. ;) It could just be a fad among my friends, but Google+ has become extremely popular on my news feed. People are posting their profiles and moving their stuff over. While we do always get used to the updates, we did at Myspace too. Until we didn't anymore. I think there will come a time when Zuckerberg crosses the line.

Jedi, I don't think too many people will move unless Google+ does more to make its site particularly attractive to Facebook users. People seem to stay where they are unless really 'pushed'. But I hope you are right. Great Hub (as usual). voted up and interesting.

I hope Facebook doesn't get to the point where they really push us to stop being on the site. Hopefully they'll know where to draw the line.

unlike when facebook first came out and everyone switched from myspace to faceboook, there are so many people on facebook now that it would take a lot for them to move to something else. also, google+ is really stupid in my opinion and most people i know dont like it and are not switching to that. personally, i am excited for the facebook changes. everyone will get used to it after a little bit and i have always been bothered that it is so hard to see things that youve done on facebook more than a week before.
